WHAT FOR NMO IS?__NMO's field-medical education, health services; MBBS/BDS students, doctors can join;
Founded-Varanasi,1977, November 5 (Rashtriya Swasthya Divas/National Health Day by Dhanakar Thakur, a
7th Semester student of MBBS {later did MD(Gen.Med.),DCH} who could collect 37 medicos from 18 medical
colleges at Varanasi in the 23rd ABVP National Conference for founding the NMO.
NMO remained on the forefronts in national calamities- e.g. Andhra cyclone (19.11.1977), MIC holocaust,
Bhopal (3.12.1984), plague of Surat (1994), earthquake in Killary (30.9.1993), Uttarakhand (29.3.1999)
and Bhuj (26.1.2001), Super-cyclone in Orissa (Oct.17-18 and 29-30,1999), Tsunami disaster (26.12.
2004), Koshi flood in 1985, 1987 & 2008, etc.
NMO units adopt villages/slums for total integral development; arrange health camps in far-flung
tribal/rural areas like northeast Indiaâs Nagaland and Meghalaya, etc. during vacations/holidays;
conduct regularly school health programmes, blood donation camps, etc. NMO organise academic seminars,
symposia, quiz etc.
NMO publishes informative bulletins and a medical journal, "Aayurvigyan Pragati" where even a medical
student can write.
NMO Conferences focus on reorientation of medical education, health services and drug policy. NMO
demands 10 per cent of budget on health; Health University in each state; LMP Diploma for rural health
needs; teaching in Indian languages.
NMO asks prescribing fewer, cheaper, safer drugs. NMO is against of quackery and selling drugs without
prescription. Drug prices be reduced by ceiling on profits and by abolition of taxes. Swadeshi
manufactured drugs (if MNCs' standard) be prescribed. Drug houses must spend 2 per cent on R&D, instead
of alluring doctors. NMO convinced GOI for intradermal anti-rabies vaccination at smaller centres,
saving Rs.200 crore annually.
Medicos forced to agitate for stipends and emoluments (lower to lesser intelligence, labour and time
demanding groups); doctors face CPA, escalating treatment cost and destroying doctor-patient
relationship-NMO is for high medical ethics.
In NMO's insignia, Dhanwantari, with Amrit Kalash and Aayurvigyan stepping to Bharat, after Samudra-
manthan depict NMO's ideology-Praninam Artinashanam Motto- Swasthya Seva-Rastra Seva. We celebrate
Dhanwantari Jayanti (2days before Deepawali) as Rahstriya Chikistak Divas/National Doctors' Day; take
Charak Shapath,comprehensive and relevant than Hippocratic Oath.
Note: The names for the President and Secretary of the NMO for the year 2020-21 should be sent by
15.3.2019 to E-Mail nmocentral@rediffmail.com Withdrawals up to 30.3.2019; if required election
will be held as per NMOâs Constitution on 6.4.2019 in the GBM. -----------------------x--------------
